Searching still for the theme word. I have selected 16a,9d and 30a as one group but lost with the others. Clueless 34a I have che?g??. Can anyone agree? Clearly I need a hint ...please.

Three words are alternative names for the theme word
Three words are places in the theme word.

I ticked off the letters mentioned in the preamble - that helped with 34A.

Truron, I meant to say that I no longer have my grid to hand, so couldn't provide much detail about numbers, locations of theme words an so on.

34a your letters are correct 30d and 3d are a 3-some

38d,37d and 2d are a 3-some

30a , 9d, and 16a are the other 3-some

Are you missing any normal clues? Filling in them might help
