I logged on to answer the first one for myself and saw your reply

I worked backward from the 'ary' . . And I presume that 'can' as in 'being in the can' means 'cage'

Not very well constructed . . or is it just me

"eg" is say/for example.
"re" is about/concerning.
"t" is short for time.
I do not see where "bill" comes in, but an egret is a wading bird like a heron.

A "petrel" is a sea bird, "in flight overseas".
Petrel sounds like petrol, a fuel...
