My last answer but I'm having trouble with the wordplay;

16d Detective more upset about daughter in a mess (8)

I have ?I?O?D?R so the answer is probably MISORDER or DISORDER, but I'm not able to parse it and would be grateful for any assistance.

Disorder - DI Sorer, with D for daughter inside

disorder.... I believe
di - detective +
sorer - more upset +
d - daughter

It's not Detective is more upset... ...is it?

...DI/ detective and Sorer, more upset. Disorder- mess.

DI is Detective Inspector.

From the outset I wrongly had in mind that Inspector 'Morse' was somehow involved within the answer 'misorder' and I failed to let go!
