Don't get waggish. Agree synonym for risible but how does WAGgish relate to footballer's mate? Please explain and sorry for being thick.
Also: Wretched Donald's top - cor! right away reporter's down.
d?s?o?d?n?
Despondent (preferred because synonym for both wretched and down, but can't see the parsing) or discordant (not a synonym but contains cor)? Which and why? Please help me to stop agonising!

Sorry, JohnT, I shouldn't have assumed you knew WAG as Wives and Girlfriends! It's been around for a long time and has even made it into Chambers.

Not at all, I should have known about WAGs, just forgetful. But I suspect there was a bit of tautology about the 'despondent' clue, both wretched and down are synonyms so wretched suggests an anagram where there was none, just a stringing together of words, part words and letters. Put me off the scent, but clearly not you

I agree that the clue appeared to include wretched as an anagram indicator when there was no anagram involved so not a great clue
