The R comes with stronghold ie FORTRESS
The 1st answer is something I have not heard of

How about "fastness" for stronghold?
Would this then give you the "N" in the right place for "fasten" to mean "close"?

I though it might provide the "N" rather than an "R" to fit your answer of "fasten!

That was my thinking too, Elle.
I thought Seamus' suggestion was rather obscure for that particular crossword.

We shall have to wait and see if Ann gets back o us on it and tells us whether those two words would fit.
