I am stuck trying to complete this! Suspect I have missed some removals - so far I have 5 ingredients and a few extra bits - 4, 4 3, 7, 3+, 4, 6, ?
I only have 4 letters from the down solutions (from 5d and 14d), which don't suggest any ingredient.
I can see no obvious consumers in the grid!
There are a number of clues at the bottom of the grid which I can't get, (some clues need to have 3 or more letters removed) :
41a Active organic compound recurrently seen in one of several old tomatoes (think ATO may be surplus) - I have _e_e_d
43a One abandoning lectures is engaged in treason - I have _r_d_s
Also stuck on 33d and 36d.

33 and 36 are the other two affected clues.

43 I think it's Trades, one engaged in treason - take the I/one out of Tirades, lectures.

The definition for 43ac contains three extra letters.

Bobbibunny, I should have said that I didn't bother getting all the letters for the ingredients.

Thanks spoffy and malone. I now have the ingredients (one a bit odd), the omitted letters from the down clues and have found the consumers. Those across clue letters were fiendishly hidden!
