I need just the last names of two famous sports greats, any sport, as long as they are well-known.

The first one's last name starts with letter "S" and ends in a letter "D"

The second one's last name starts with "E" and ends in letter "O".

1: don't know if he qualifies as a sporting great but David Sheppard is well-known for playing for England at cricket and subsequently becoming the Bishop of Liverpool

2 possibilities are Sherrod & Eugenio, both football players, but I'm sure there are many others: try the usual alphabetical lists under "famous sportsmen"!
