I'm still puzzled - if changing chest to torso gave you the initial t in taking note, would your first crosser not originally have been c ( rather than b)?

Pedantic question: for BARE TORSO, given that TORSO is across, isn't "balls up" incorrect, since "up" should only be applied to a down clue?
