I shouldn't have been so pleased with myself last week, as I
have had a real struggle today. Have finally wrestled it down
to one, which is 6d. Capitalists shoot over to.ships.(9)
I have ?u?l?n?r?. I can make two words out of this but
neither of them make any sense to me.

Dubliners = capitalists(def)
dub - bud;shoot (over)
liners - ships

The solution is made up of a word for shoot reversed and a word for ships. Definition is people from a capital city

I didn't like 16a Now a director at sea (2,5)

Why "Now"?; surely it's better without it?

Many easy clues this week, but I'm struggling on the last few in the bottom half. A hint for 18a might help...
