Are you sure of the N in the third clue? Knot is difficulty and reversed (in recession) is tonk - hit?

Does the first clue have another word in it like chimney? The Scots word for chimney is lum. Obscure the middle of castle - chateau with Lum and you get chalumeau- an ancient reed musical instrument?
