Shortcake seems correct, but I think 99% of Scots would always refer to Shortbread!

I agree, it's interesting because only yesterday I was reading that it wasn't until quite late that the terms - bread/cake came to mean separate items of foodstuff.

I used to think Shortcake was the American version, softer and less crisp/short - used in their Strawberry Shortcake. It was only when I checked Chambers that I read that Shortcake is also 'shortbread or other friable cake...'.

You were right, mamya - I spelled the word ventricle as ventrical, which gave me an L instead of an E in the word I was looking for. You're also correct, malone. We in Scotland refer to it as shortbread, but it's shortcake in this instance, which has finished my crossword. Thanks to both of you for your assistance.
