Rather empty grid right of the blank diagonal... these would help:
There is an extra letter in the clue (possibly in the defn, possibly in the wordplay)
32a Unilluminated spectral region in new radiant when switched, staying black (8) no letters yet...
38a Badgers about scattering sand over verges (9) ??A??????

32. radiant => radian, rainband; anagram of [n (new) + radian] round b (band).
38. sand => sad, roadsides badgers = rides round an anagram of [sad + o(over)].

Oops b (black).
