I thought the extra word in 40a begins with L.

Hardest of the 3 this weekend I thought.

Best getting name of the character in misprints. The title of the film is a great help.

I see what you mean about L. I googled and found an Australopithecus!
I actually thought this puzzle was a welcome change from the previous 2 inquisitors and most answers came quite easily.

I'm a chap who hasn't finished it! Any hints on 41a would be appreciated. Thanks.

A direct education is closed for the old-fashioned (7).

Orson
It is closed in the sense of approached or passed near to, rather than shut. The answer is an archaic synonym of it.
