The first clue doesn't make sense.

PAL is rhyming slang, of course - CHINA PLATE - MATE

Chris, I think the clue does make sense?
"perhaps" means expressing doubt, uncertainty, possibility
"It could be" = "perhaps", as definition?

Elle, I think Chrise was referring to 3d ? The clue was corrected on a further thread

There are so many unnecessary threads being opened, it is no wonder that I am confused!

No problem, elle. I wonder why it's so common for people to start a new thread rather than add to an existing one.

Last summer I counted 16 different threads on the same Saturday Times crossword one weekend!
