but cannot parse it !?....beyond KID (issue)

While we are parsing , how about the full explanation of 17d
'Muse over bad rockets in Canaveral? (8)'

I have CALLIOPE and parsed it as ..well it is the name of a muse ...and
Canaveral = Cape Canaveral , so have CAPE
over = o in cricket shorthand
bad = ill , so have ILL . Have already used the sense of 'over' , so can over be used to make ILL = LLI ?

rockets - how is this used ? (other than reinforcing connection to Cape Canaveral)

So assume LLI and O put in CAPE

o(ver) + ill (rockets goes up in) inside cape

Thanks chrisg , I find my logic is stretched by David Mclean's use of language , some clues would not stand alone and only solvable if you already have some letters in place - guess that is what cryptic means !

Yes agreed. I wonder if Prince Charles does the crossword, and if he does would he take offence at 24d!
