No criticism intended, ginge - just a usage that I've never encountered.

My comment wasn't meant as a criticism, Ginge - just a reflection on my own perspicacity.

@ mattrom: hi, while "punter" intthe surface refers to a prostitute's client it's also used over here as "person/individual".

Hi again chrise, therogue and mattrom. I didn't assume any of your comments were criticisms and I much prefer that you have asked for parsing.

Sorry if I'm becoming a bore and labouring the point but it (ken) was probably still fresh in my mind from its use in the wordplay of 26d in last Saturday's Listener crossword.

Hi BBM2, it's straightforward in an android phone Google keyboard. Just depress and holdthe "2" key and it comes up as an option. Same goes for, graves, accents, ccircumflexes, umlauts etc.

I got the Slinky/spring ref straight away but thought the brothel was a ref to "The Chicken Ranch" in Nevada.
