Kirky,
My mistake, I'm missing one clash now.

21d is EUSCARA, the Basque region.

I have a clash at row 2 cell 3. Still haven't worked out what to do with the clashes or the end games, but there are a few associated names amongst the clues. Is that significant?

The eighth clash is 26/17. But what on earth they want you to do by way of finding mutually exclusive ways remains a mystery, but as has been pointed out, if the 8 cells are to be "darkened" (odd word - is that a hint?) it doesn't seem to matter. The 10-letter bloke seems an all-round good sort - unusual for his class at that time. But how he came to resolve clashes isn't told on wiki.

Kirky. I see what you mean, and they each spell out in order left to right down the grid! But there are two instructions to resolve clashes in the preamble. Also, not all the clashes produce non-words. Is there something else to find?

I'm pretty sure now that the method we are looking for is:
--s------- not --v-------
but I still cannot see how to represent that in the grid.
