I'm trying to set a cryptic crossword for a group of friends that get together every now and then. I've got a number of clues together so far, and it's going ok, but I have one clue, which I really, like, but I am not sure if it's a bit too cryptic. I mean, I think it obeys the rules, but maybe I'm just trying to be a bit too clever. Anyway, let's see if anyone gets it and if not I'll put the answer up and some alternate clues I've come up with. The clue is:

Half half half half half half half god. (5)

:-) any ideas anyone?

Allah?

half half : al
half half : la
half (of) half half : h

Isn't it more like a dingbat than a crossword clue?

Well, you worked it out pretty much exactly as I thought of it, but came up with a different answer!!!

(I would be concerned about "half half = la", since the letters are reversed. Would that be fair?)

Other than that, though, I'm very impressed, and appreciate the effort. Shall I tell you the answer I had in mind?

Ok, well I'll tell you my answer. I worked on the fact that the words "semi" and "demi" also mean "half". Then the clue could be read:

Half half: ha
Half demi: de
Half (of) half semi: s
HADES

I was concerned that I was going a step too far with the above, but now I think that if there are two answers, then maybe it's not such a good clue after all.

I did come up with another version, (which my girlfriend though was funnier!), which was:

Semi half semi demi hemi demi semi god (5).

... but HADES is a place and not a god!
