Having trouble parsing these...

5d Survive exile only with a change of heart (7) - OUTLAST (Survive)

2d Out of dope, real vexed overall (2,7) - IN GENERAL (Overall)

I can see DOPE = GEN + REAL (Anag. (Vexed)), but where does the 'IN' come from?

Out C ast with the centre letter changed

5. I think Outcast was the exile,then change the central letter ('heart'j - so becomes Outlast,survive.

Any help, Brendan?
