Really struggling with several but here are two -

As soon as I posted the penny dropped on MUTE , but I think El Alamein was still a long way away !

Although I put TAROT in for 2d ' Left one holding a pack of cards '(5)

I cannot see the meaning of 'left one ' part of the clue. ???

Also 23ac 'Teacher was giddy one ' (5) , I have SWAMI , but do not see why the M occurs ( if 'SWAMI' means 'teacher' ; 'SWA ' equals 'WAS giddy ' ; and 'I' is 'one' ) ???

and finally 'banana republic' !! ...have read the previous concerning this one but it remains to me unexplained beyond connection of bananas and hands , I can only see the word republic arising from having all letters from nearby clues in place !

Don't have the crossword, so can only be of limited help.
Left one is a Trot (short for Trotskyist - left winger with a in it?
Swam - was giddy - My head swam- with one- i ?

Banana Republic is really just an 'and lit' clue - in the fact that all of such a Republic's strength lies purely in a single commodity.
