For the across one, it looks like malevolent, maledicent or maleficent.

That would give me 17 down as ???o?i?e, with the 2nd letter being "i" or "e". That could be limonite, pisolite, dolomite or lomolite.

As I cant parse any of 'em, can anyone clue me in please?
