I'm stuck !!

18a Detectives tailing foremost flyer (5)

I have: P???T

It suggests to me :PILOT but apart from "flyer" I can't work it out

Any ideas ??

Pi = private investigator so Pi + PI + t (first letter of tailing) + Pipit - a bird (flyer)
