It would be nice to have a higher level of difficulty, but it is for the American market (no offence meant).

Cryptics are rather rare & relatively new over here; also a dearth of setters.
Atlantic - ran for about a decade; stopped in 2008. Cox & Rathvon moved to The WSJ.
Harper's - about the same, but still going. Just Maltby.
WSJ[/] - not sure. Only periodical that doesn't require a subscription.
If someone wishes to trawl back, their earliest puzzle is A Lot to Offer, currently at offset 156, though all the dates for several pages are Dec 31, 1969 !

When the cryptics started is hard to say as even now they are not always labelled correctly.
Also, there is a problem with ancient Java on early ones.
So, a challenge to any crypto-archaeologists out there. Please post any info.
