Pretty sure it is languishing but why?

Yes, Languishing, becoming feeble. The pain is in heather - NOT heather in pain as said in the clue. Anguish, pain, is inside Ling, heather. L anguish ing.

Is it just me or is that a very poor clue?

I am guessing that Just the opposite refers to the fact that it is pain in Heather rather than the other way round.
