I appear to be first this week, is it that easy ?
However 17D is still outstanding "Event victory up-river following Munich Agreement". *A*E*I*. Further clues please

hi devonian
I found it a bit tricky this week.
17d def. is an item(used in Olympic event for example)
Munich agreement = word for "yes" in German(Munich)
followed by v (victory) + a river (reversed)

Many thanks Jazzgirl, I had the word but couldn't see the connection to the clue. I thought 8A & 15 A were clever & the answer to 23 A was a new word for me

Yes, 23a I had heard of the word, but with a different meaning. I had to check the dictionary to confirm that it was a cat as well as an "old crone"

20A kept me puzzling a while. It was the end of the clue that I had difficulty with. Initially it seemed unnecessary. I got the fifty turning in but the use of "turning out" puzzled me. I think that turning out has been used in the sense of "gathering together". In this case for a purpose.

Is that how others read the expression? Maybe I am not cryptic enough for cross words

Hi Mop

I read the parsing the same as you, though it did puzzle me for a while

"Turning in" being the 7 letter word
Out indicating it goes outside the L

Late to this (I've been away) and found it a very odd mixture. Some lovely clues, but some I think are a bit dodgy. I saw AB mentioned on another thread the lost battle that "panini" is a plural Italian word. Also what is the last letter in 16a - either S or X works (RT has done this before!)

Biggest problem is 13d
Doctor has seen Iran's awful gloom (10)

Isn't there a superfluous N in the fodder?

Hi Chris
According to Chambers 12th, panini (plural) is "sometimes loosely used as singular"
16a I went for eaux sounds like Oh) the alternative ending of s would be a prononced sound
There is an error of an extra n in 13d which I had not noticed

Thanks jazzy
You are right of course on bureaux - do you remember the one where beaus or beaux was around UR?
I agree the cause is lost on "panini" - somewhat sore as Italian is the foreign lnauage I'm most fluent in (though that doesn't claim a lot).
Glad I wasn't mistaken about the extra N.
