Can one use " had had " in a sentence? Would it be correct grammatically?

I think it's fine.

'Over the years, my mother had had more than enough of my tantrums.'

has had = compound past, more recent than

had had = pluperfect further away in the past

We all use it a lot in conversation in the contracted form of

He'd had a bad day, - we don't always realise that it is in fact had had.
