After solving a couple of hundred clues in my company's annual Christmas crossword, we are left with one clue which has us completely stumped after several days of endless googling, dictionary searches etc.
So, we give up and accept that we need help on this one.

Clue is 'r (but better than a dot!)' and the template is 'R?N'

Can anyone help please ?

Thanks
R.

Run? In cricket a dot ball is one in which no run is made. R is short for run.

Run. In cricket a non-scoring delivery is referred to as a "dot ball" and recorded by the scorer as a dot.

Great .. thanks. Would never have got that one !

My wife just reminded me of another which we're not sure about.

Clue is 'Too big for these ends? Largely!' and the template is O?R?

Our guess is OARS (as they have large ends) but we can't completely follow the logic of the clue.

Thanks again
Ron

Ogre? It's formed from the last letters in the start of the clue, Too big for these.
