Carpox, I know what you mean. I had to reverse-engineer over half the down clues. Finding the Crossword Man Playfair tool made the whole process a lot easier.

Thank you all for your helpful hints. I now have it all, though I see no ambiguity in the unclued answers. i have been surprised at how unfamiliar with Playfair many people are. Shows my age, I suppose. Ximenes often set Playfair puzzles in his Observer series. I haven't done Azed for years so I don't know if he continues with the occasional Playfair. This puzzle was certainly a sensational variation on the genre. At first sight it seemed totally impossible, since we're used to having answers en clair to compare with coded forms. But once one realised the vital importance of 23 and 41 across light gradually dawned.

Have been slow so well behind others . My entry re BOX should have read related to 29 ac so I was being a numpty. Having finally understood the importance of 23 and 41 across, I have it. Thank you for nudges. Now I only have to work out the rest of the clues.....

Can I just confirm that others also have KIST for 1d, and SHOE for the symmetrically opposite unclued entry?

Great stuff, Unclued. Thanks. Sadly I need nudges for 27 and 37 as I forgot one letter extra does not really help.
