Thanks Dryden, but in accordance with Meursault's initial post on this thread I used www.chessgames.com to find how the board looked when A's opponent resigned and noted there was more than one difference between it and the - 25 ? - positions marked by the thematic letters on Rasputin's board. (I assume we are dealing with A's first use of the tactic and not a subsequent one by the way !)

Son1ofrover1, I think it's beyond doubt that this is the Nimzowitsch game, the wikipedia page does detail move 31 as Kh2. As to whether this was the precise board at the end of a game played 85 years ago is open to question.

Dryden, I totally agree about the entries involving more than one clash. As a result, solving the last few became a bit of a slog, though reducting possibilities of clash letters did help. As with the error in 4376, and perhaps with some seasonal spirit, I'm trying to be kind to setters...at least for a while...

Thanks to all the help here I have a grid completed to my satisfaction but I cannot make out what 27dn was supposed to be. Is it an abbreviation for "manufacturer" and how does the extra letter fit in with it? Thanks for any clarification.

Thanks very much for that. I was thinking the M had to go in the first cell.

Have enjoyed this puzzle very much but am still a litttle baffled as to what to shade ! There are 12 black pieces and 13 white ones, so to shade the former in the appropriate colour is not exactly (exactly being the operative word ! )"shading half the cells therein". Hence my niggle. Or must we simply make the centre square look like a chess board by shading the obvious 32 squares, irrespective of the pieces on them ? Any hints / help would be very much appreciated ! !

The NEPER is a "log of current relationships". The NET is the web and PER can mean A as in "tenpence a go". Put PER in NET and the extra letter is T.
