Hi mamya
I thought of reef for less canvas (brought up on Swallows and Amazons), but I didn't think the grammar was right [ shouldn't it be "winding" rather than "winds"?

Maybe - I read it as 'The wind is up' , so having less sails is 'Reefing' them in. I am likely wrong.

Never mind a new puzzle in a few hours.

A "roller reef" does involve winding up the sail on the boom.

Yes I know what reefing is just having trouble putting the wordplay in.

Sorry mamya - I was trying to find another way of working "wind" in. Still not sure it works, though.

Let's try ....

If you have been reefing then you wind up (end up) with less canvas (sail).
