Nelson, I can't help - I didn't start this until after dinner and haven't got very far!

Yes, first clue starts in top left corner. All across clues are listed first, and are ''symmetric'' (no unclued entries) so key is working out where they finish and the down clues start.

I've solved all the clues, with three clashes. The clashes are such that real words are formed which ever letter is chosen. As for the two unclued entries, all that seems to fit is a person known for making things (or else a man who deals with words) and a biblical character (also a variation). That makes no sense at all to me and the title Can Henry ought to be a hint.

Nelson, if it helps further, the first two answers are on the top line with a space in the middle, and the first down clue is "no longer impose tax.....". I have found a need to change a letter in 3D but am stuck with the quotation required and two or three blank squares I still cannot see what to do with: anyone finished this, can you help with the word at the bottom of the right hand column. I have a word, but don't know why....

Orson, we posted simultaneously...I see a poem about Henry...but can find no relevance, also cannot suss out the bottom word in column 1. Also lines 6 and 7 seem to have gobbledegook...what am I missing?

Hi, jogamel,

Face of exquisite is E. Phi is a Greek character. The hearts of ten noble are E and B. There is a clash in the third square in the sixth row. In the seventh row there is one 6-letter answer starting in the fifth square.

Sorry, there are four clashes, and now it makes a bit more sense. The first unclued entry describes someone's job. Look that up in the index in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.

I think Can Henry? might be a reference to John H?

Seven letters, surely?
