"Chunk of text shortened? This rubber's useful". I think it's "para".

The explanation's rather dull I'm afraid - as you say, the 'chunk of text shortened' is PARA, short for paragraph, while the useful rubber is PARA rubber, 'rubber produced from the tree Hevea brasiliensis', often known just as 'Para' (the term deriving from the Brazilian state of the same name).
