I've got CHANGE PL... now - that A was wrong.

Open becomes NOPE, so N has moved, and large becomes GLARE - the N and G for CHANGE, etc.

I didn't bother with the second instruction - I think it's gettable from (literally) the first. It's an 11 letter modification that identifies the cause...

The shifted letter can be either FROM the start of the word or TO the start of the word. 9dn is of the latter form.

Thanks all - all is now clear and the 11 letter word is under my grid...

Finished, apart from 21A. I have everything but the unches, yet can't fathom it.

21 is just an anagram, Nelson - you've probably got most of it.
