Appreciate ante is before. a lab vessel for burning - never heard of before. Possibly did not pay attention in the science lab. at school. Bunsen burner was the only thing I remember. Obviously , didn't pass.
Did google with ref. to the above, alas , only got volcano.

One is never too old to learn.

I have a chemistry degree and had never heard of an etna!
Googling etna burner you seem to get two different answers.
(a) A gas burner similar to a Bunsen burner
(b) A vessel, a cup fixed in a saucer in which alcohol is burnt - this definition is in my elderly Chambers
Some crosswords are really educational :-)
