I have an almost full grid ( one empty cell ). The only word I can find to fit the pattern I have for 29 across means "burning" or "scorching" which is not in keeping with the clue which is "Ed's torn and Ed's soaked" ( 5 ) which yields a redundant letter. I can find an old word beginning with "Y" which means "torn" but that would not fit with the only possible thematic answer at 25 down.Any hints/suggestions/pushes in the right direction would be appreciated.

Your first letter is wrong, ap. Think of a word for soaked and then come up with an old (Spenerian) version of it.

Thanks for that Orson. I was making the mistake of not allowing for the change of the first letter to fit in with the thematic answer.

I'm confused by the extra letter in 28d. The clue suggests that W is the extra letter, but A is the only one that would fit into the sentence generated, as far as I can see. Have I missed something or made a daft mistake?
I don't want to give the theme away.
