Thanks, nelson. I suspected an anagram but I made the mistake of looking up Thailand in Wikipedia where it gives the code for it as TH. T for Thailand is in Chambers (if any of you have got it).
Help! I have the theme and a completed grid apart from the shaded entry on the second bottom row. I can't find a 'variety' that works with A?NE?OO. Are those letters correct?
Yes, your letters are correct - it's a very strange variety! It's in my Bradford's crossword solver's dictionary - do you have that? If not, here's an additional clue... the real/whole word begins with H.
Thanks, malone. Just the hint I needed to find it in Chambers and the EPIC FANDANGO is now fully accounted for. (I have recently returned to themed cryptics after a long break and have noticed several references to Bradford's. Santa has been informed).
