I don't really have an ego, but I can appreciate that it might not come across that way. The way I see it this puzzle was meant to be easy with a theme I thought to be fairly accessible. It may not have turned out that way, and for that I'm sorry as it wasn't my intent to have a hard puzzle -- particularly as, if we're honest, the endgame is pretty boring really -- so I'm happy to provide hints to the theme as that still leaves the majority of the actual work -- clue solving, jigsaw entry, etc -- to be done.

All the same, I'll not contribute anything else to this thread from now on. But it really isn't an ego thing.

Jim, I really enjoyed this puzzle...it's already posted off. A short grid search is not anything to be sorry for. There's nothing worse than successfully completing a crossword and then having to stare at it for absolutely ages for a sort of word-search. . I'm a little concerned about the personal comments and would like to think you for the pleasure of your crossword.

I also enjoyed this puzzle.
I thought the clues were quite tough. I got there the wrong way round as I used the hint to get the extra letters and then found the answers, but it was still fun. I would still be staring at the clues if I hadn't read the hint.
I won't submit my entry for that reason.

All done, but the theme really was a bit too obscure to merit such a convoluted construction, even for this child of the 70s !

One wordplay still eludes me at 8d:

Thin fabric for a payment given to a king once (6)

Answer: TAMISE
Extra letter from WP: O

I wonder whether the 'for' should really be 'from' ?
