Acc. to Ch. "centrum" only refers to "the main part of a vertebra", so I don't see how that can fit. Remains a mystery to me, too, unfortunately...................

SOED defines centrum as "A centre; spec. (Anatomy) the solid central part of a vertebra, to which the arches and processes are attached."
