Can anyone parse:

Brilliant and smart, securing century, batting until middle of day (13).. Answer is scintillating

Book following mad hero's search involving old sea creature (9,4). Horseshoe crab. I know the first bit is an anagram of heros search and the end is b for book but not the stuff in between.

Base that is held by criminal not yielding. (8). Obedient. But why?

S C(entury) in (batting) till ing (sting = smart)
Hero's search + o + b
Not (anagram) around bed (base) + ie (that is)

Base = BED + That Is = IE + Anagram of NOT
