Sounds good rusty but it clashes with a checkletter for another clue which maybe is wrong:

5D Bounder attests that they are always late (8)

?A???E?S which I thought was HASBEENS but if SCALES is correct the check letters for 5D would now be

?A?A?E?S

Cad = bounder
Avers = attests.
Cadavers are corpses, hence late, John?
