Hi Jogamel and others,

Unlike you, I've got the observation but not the information to complete the puzzle. The first two what? And the penultimate word seems to use the letters DA then ED.

20a - who carries clubs? (not the card variety)
23a - inmates is extra and the answer is hidden in the clue
24a - A famous Blair, not Tony or George Orwell. Half of lied - about/on etc.

Yes, Orson, DA and ED is correct. But I still do not know what the TWO refers to. Can anyone help?

The two are from the 'observation' of the character - it's quite explicit.

It is the observation I cannot get Malone. I must have some letters wrong

Orson, sorry - I didn't notice you already had the observation. c The first word in the pared-down observation is the vital one, and the full observation gives the detail needed.

Jogamel, it's hard to give hints - I don't know where your gaps are, or where you might have gone wrong.

Thank you all. I will look again this evening and maybe suggest where I must be wrong.

Thanks, malone, I've got it now. I got the first word of the observation wrongly as "there" so that led me astray. The last word but one still eludes me but I don't need it to finish the puzzle.

Orson, glad you got there. I really enjoyed this one.

Jogamel, Orson's remark should help you with the observation!

I really enjoyed this puzzle. I like the relevance of the answers to 1a and 45a. I shan't be staying up tonight in anticipation, however.

Orson and Malone, I changed my THERE to THREE before I read your posts (honestly) whilst making soup... And got it at last. Thank you as always. Great fun.
