In case I have to make the deciding vote, could you further explain this, please - I'm not seeing it:

Those standing = Bearers (behind - placed after)

Hi Chris,

To 'stand' something - i.e., pain
Is to 'bear' it
So, those standing could be the 'bearers'
This goes after (behind) the next part of the word play which is 'Prisoner' = someone doing a stretch - a stretcher? Cryptic Def
Then the def is - Of war supporters - stretcher bearers on the battle fields. -

Thank goodness that busby has saved me from having to make the decision! Chiaro, paul, ginge, and BBN3 all have 1 vote each; jws and les have 2 votes; but the clear winner is ixion with 3 votes for:
