2. TIMES 26238 5d/n "Hip replacement for the queen arranged, say finally" TRENDY (=hip)

3. MEPHISTO 2878 20a/c "Immigrant profits not for all to see, in short" ISSEI ( US Japanese immigrant)

4.TIMES 26239 13a/c "Boy and mate entertained by mature singer" SONG SPARROW (singer). SON & GROW ok, but why "spar".

3 Are you sure that's right? "Not for all to see" might mean "take a U out - of ISSUES perhaps?

4 SPAR = mate as in "sparring partner"? Seems rather loose.

Inuit and Trendy - me and wood and trees as per.

Further research/thought reveals this:-

"SPAR" in "SONGSPARROW" - OED online (via my local library) lists "spar" for "check" (verb), hence (check)"mate". New to me.

ISSEI is correct - ISSUE = PROFITS (Chambers, also new to me!), take out "U" as you say and add i' which is short form of in (as in "in short") as used in Shakespeare &c.
