22D After south wind east is severe (7) A?S?E?E

The only answer which fits is AUSTERE, but how do I parse the "After south wind east" bit?

Remeber that Myops is alos the compiler of the Wee Stinker every Monday, so the clue could be really obscure!

I had austere too but hadn't worked out why.
I have now checked and auster is a geographical term for the south wind + e for east.
