Thank you Crosswhit 99. The missing letters i have found in order are
HEILTIHRCNCHEARYRBNTPNVAEOETTE One is still missing (Hopefully) Would it be an L?

I am still completely in the dark of what I must do with them in order to get the required solutions. I do not follow the rubric at all.

I have slightly diff to you:
HEI then O from 14a, I from 15a, LTIHRCNC nothing from 37 or 38, N from 39a, ARY
From the downs : RBNTPNV, then L 10d, AEOE then T from 25d then E from 33a

Using these letters in your grid, read from L to R and down etc & hopefully you will be able to see 2 more works by AM and his thematic occasion (google his dates if you haven't got his thematic occasion).

(In the reading of the letters the letters of the 2 works & the thematic occ are all in the right order but interspersed in the grid.)

In your string of 30 letters, the first 5 are correct, then you have 2 missing (from 17a and 19a). The next 6 are correct, then H and E are wrong (there is just one letter here supplied by 39a). The next 10 are correct, then you are missing a letter from 10d. The next 2 are correct then the O from 20d should be I ('Italian' is part of the definition not the wordplay). The sequence should end ETE (you have a T too many). One of your missing letters is indeed L.

When these 31 letters are shaded in the grid and read from left to right and top to bottom the names of 2 further plays (3,5 and 2,7) and the special occasion (5,9) commemorated by the puzzle are revealed, but they are interspersed, hence the need for colour coding.

Sorry, it's getting late ! I meant to say your first 3 are correct then you are missing 2 from 14a and 15a, next 8 correct. My apologies.
