Am I living in a parallel universe? For me, the clue for 53a was "disappeared into NI county, having run away for card game (6-3)". My answer is "twenty-one" i.e. "went" = having run away, and the remaining letters being "Tyrone" (NI county) with missing "r" i.e. having "run away". If that's not right, then my answers to 46d 31d, 37d and 48d must all be wrong!

Twenty one fits with all the crossers :)

I think Alfie was doing the non-cryptic version of the Jumbo. I've no longer got the paper, but I think I checked out the clue the other day.
