Washed and refreshed. We have a ridiculous number of apples this year. We cook the green ones, but what are we going to do with all the red ones?

No ideas yet, jolan! (on your 5, that is).

My four offerings are

2. SIGNIFICANT OTHER (person's sexual partner) mark - sign; assuming - if; I'm unable - I can't; return to - ot; a female - her

3. WEBCAM (online viewer) net - web; almost reached - cam(e)

4. SELF-SERVICE (helping oneself) anagram of "fleecing vipers say" minus "paying"

5. FAIR ISLE (type of design) Man, for example - isle; just - fair (put down first - in front of Isle)

I have a few possible answers for #1, but cannot parse any of them, so have to
remain stumped '
I enjoyed puzzling over these and thank you for your challenge, as always jolan. x

1. Cold-blooded creature comes from Ecuador to join the soldiers on board, perhaps (9) - Ectotherm.
Ec(Ecuador), 'to', 'the', rm(Royal Marines - soldiers on board, perhaps).

2. Mark assuming I’m unable to return to a female person’s sexual partner (11,5) - Significant Other.
Sign(Mark), if I Can't(assuming I’m unable to), ot(return to) and her(a female).

3. Net almost reached online viewer (6) - Webcam.
Web(net), cam[e](almost reached).

4. Fleecing vipers, say, is uncommon without paying or helping oneself (4-7) - Self-service
Anagram of(is uncommon) 'Fleecing vipers say' minus p.a.y.i.n.g.

5. Man, for example, just put down first type of design (4,4) - Fair Isle
Isle(Man, for example) with fair(just) written before it(put down first).

Had quite a lot of time to spend today so was very happy to see your clues this week Jolan.
hope i'm correct with the rest of my post.

Lovely clues, jolan - thanks again. Just had time to see FAIR ISLE.

Look forward to the next one, but don't feel obliged to make it next week!

ChrisE there are some good tips on Wikihow.com on how to store red apples long-term. My family used to wrap them individually in tissue paper and lay out on pallets in the cellar !

Jolan: have a really good break for however long you wish, , enjoy your gardening and we shall look forward to seeing you whenever you feel like it.

Thanks jazzy - though storing them would only postpone the problem - none of us eat raw apples all that much (I ate my first apple for 10 years a couple of years ago and broke my dental bridge!)

Apple sauce, apple mint jelly etc., but that's just the cookers. We inherited the trees when we moved in 30 odd years ago. Not as bad as a friend of mine in Louth, though - he moved to his "ideal home" (modernist!) and had to sign a contract that he would contniue to look after the 120 or so fruit trees that the previous owner had planted. He gave the apples to a local cider maker. We tried the cider - it was awful (and I like cider.)

I love eating apples; I have one every day, sliced first and often (naughtily ) with ice cream on top, or mixed with other fresh fruit
