1. Small sphere or circle. Bearing.

Presumably something to do with ball bearing but which part of the clue indicates that the initial four letters should be dropped?

2. Close to - halfway there - death? Night

This is presumable close to (nigh) plus the initial letter of 'there' but what does the halfway refer to?

Small sphere is a bearing and circle "be a ring" ?
Could be half of to - t ?

close - nigh
to - halfway - t[o].
