On = leg (cricket term ?)

Is this correct or am I missing something?

Hi Les, you've got it spot on : read it as watching a race with a bet on, especially horse (or in this day and age, dogs, athletes or cartoons).

Well chaps I had a mental picture of somebody running whilst trying to get the footwear on properly ie "booting the leg" - that was the &lit bit.
Yeah I see the elements in wordplay as well.

Maybe I'm seeing a layer of complexity that's not really there! Not changing my vote though ...
