Chambers gives CARL as Scots for a miser (whether this describes all "fellows" is another question).

Is there a word that crosses the first letter in xxRx?

Hi Kilgore! Sorry not to have replied sooner.

CARL looks good because the connecting down clue now ends in C so the 4 letters are C?R?

Thanks
